The gambling game of blackjack is often called a game of Twenty-one as the value 21 is an integral part of the gameplay. The principle of the game is that the player must have a hand value that is closer to 21 and higher than that of the dealer with the condition that his hand value must, under no condition, exceed the value of 21. Blackjack is played directly between the players and the dealer, where all gamblers play individually and a fellow-player’s cards are not relevant to anyone’s game even though they may be seated next to one another or at the same game table. So all players play against the dealer separately and the dealer’s single hand competes against each players’ single hands in turn and at showdown all the cards are revealed and results are recorded accordingly.

One important aspect of a blackjack game is that the entire play is strictly following some specific set of rules and regulations, and like all the participating players, the dealer also has to observe them. The blackjack game dealer has no power in decision making in the gameplay or outcome of the hands. For this reason and also because no players are competing against one another, it is not illegal for the other players or the dealer to see what cards a particular player is holding in his hands. As a matter of fact, beginners in the game of blackjack often play the ‘shoe’ game where the players’ cards are all dealt with their faces turned up. It is also possible that a rookie player, who is new to the game and has not become a professional gambler, faces some problem with the cards he has been given. In such cases, it is extremely normal for the player to ask the dealer or any other fellow player seated at the game table questions to solve the doubt, a situation that is not forbidden by the game rules.

For hand-held games of blackjack where the players are dealt hole cards as the two initial cards which they can handle by themselves, certain regulations are needed to be followed. This includes the injunction regarding the optional third card in the game which states that if a player decides to draw a third card and it is dealt to him, he must let that card lie on the table and he cannot take the card in his hand.

After the dealer and all the players have received their cards, the gameplay starts with the gambler, seated at the left of the dealer and who is also sometimes referred to as the first base. One by one, all the players indicate to the dealer how they intend to play their hand. This is followed by the dealer completing his own hand and after showdown the winners are accordingly paid or if they have lost, the bets placed by the players are collected.

In an exception to the dealing of the cards in a blackjack game, some casino houses, especially those in Europe, allow the dealer once one face up card until all the participating players have completed their hands with their quota of two or three cards. When each of the player has formed his hand, the dealer deals himself the second card and the optional third card, if he chooses, and makes his own hand complete. This is known as the European No Hole Card rule. The significance of this rule is that it may affect a player’s game tactics in case the dealer has a blackjack and he collects the bets from all the players as the sole winner of the hand. Some casinos specify that if the dealer hits a blackjack after being dealt only a single card initially, the players would be enabled to get refund on their double-down or split wagers. This relaxation of the European No Hole Card rule doesn’t require players to change their optimal playing strategy.

The process of making a bet in a blackjack game is very simple. There is a circle or a box on the game table which acts as the pot where the bet has to be placed in. generally the bet amount is placed inside the circle as a single stack of chips before each hand of play starts. In case, a player is betting with chips of varied denomination, the larger value chips are to be placed at the bottom of the stack and the lowest value chip on top. The player cannot touch the bet amount he has put in the circle once he has received his cards. If he wishes to ascertain the bet size so that he can double or split it, the dealer counts the chips and tells the amount to the player.

When one hand of play is over, the dealer goes up to each individual players in turn and hand them the payout if they have won and take away the chips from those who have lost. A player can take away his bet amount from the circle once he has been paid and place a new bet amount for the next hand. However, if he wants to continue playing with his winnings, his new bet including his profits must form a single chip stack.

When one wants to quit playing the game altogether, he can cash in his chip stack by taking it to the cashier who will pay the requisite dough. An important action before a player goes to cash in is the coloring up of the chips. So, a dealer can take away the smaller value chips from the player and give him equivalent amount of larger denomination chips. This helps in handling and managing chips better and anytime between the hands, a player can exchange his chips by coloring them up and get a smaller chip stack that can be used either for playing more games at another game table or for cashing in from the cashier.

Once a blackjack player has chosen his ideal game table and joined in to play, he has to transform his dough into playing chips. Once this is done and the player has got his buy-in of chips, he must learn the colors of the different chips valued at different denomination. The $1 value chips are the lowest and sometimes the blackjack game table, instead of the white colored chips, has silver tokens of $1 denomination or maybe a combination of both. However, the most prominently colored chips are the red, the green and the black. While the red chips have a value of $5, the green chips are valued at $25 each. The most common high value chips used in blackjack games are the black colored ones which stand for $100. Some casinos have specialized chips with a denomination of $2.50 and they are typically pink in color. The color of chips valued at more than $100 don’t have any specific colors and may vary from one casino house to another, or from one location to another. Commonly purple colored chips are used for $500 chips in blackjack games.

All rookie blackjack players should know which color of chips is assigned what value and make no mistake while playing. A detail often overlooked by players, whether new or veteran, but that should not be missed, is to check out if the chips received in lieu of the cash paid are equivalent or not. In case of doubts, it is always advisable to go up to the dealer who is assigned the task of solving all queries from the players in addition to conducting the game. For the rookie gamblers, playing in ‘shoe’ games, the blackjack game dealer actively helps them in learning the ropes of the game and gain experience and confidence as players.

Blackjack games can be played either with few card decks or with several card decks. Rookie players should start playing the multi-deck games as it helps them begin experience so that they can later move on to the more skilful and difficult play of lesser card deck using blackjack games. The reason why veteran blackjack players prefer fewer card decks to be used in the games they play is that with lesser number of decks used, the house edge of the casinos also become lower.

A very significant stage of entering into playing a blackjack game is buying the chips. The blackjack chips are sold to the players seated at the game table by the dealer himself and the chips are then used to place bets. While a player can join a blackjack game whenever there is a kind of break in the play and put the money he wants to stake on the game table in front of himself, some casino houses require the player to wait till the dealer has shuffled the playing cards before he can join the game. It is crucial that the player should know his optimal betting limits. Generally a player spends 10 to 20 times the value of his average bet amount for the buy-in. So if someone’s average bet size is $10, his ideal buy-in would be $100-200.

However, the cash must not be given to the dealer directly as he is forbidden to accept any cash from the players for security concerns. So, the player is required to put the cash on the game table from where the dealer collects it and gives the equivalent amount of chips. It should be borne in the mind that only the exact amount should be placed on the table with which to buy the chips. The dealer never returns any cash back as change and converts the whole amount put on the table into playing chips and gives them to the player. The cash is collected into a slot at the top of the game table.
